Cody Burdett – Head Coach
Cody started wrestling at the age of 10 in Roosevelt, Utah. He was a terrible wrestler. He only won 2 matches in his first year of wrestling (including the spring season). But he kept working and practicing. By Junior High, he had started having success which motivated him to practice more wrestle different tournaments around the region all throughout the spring and summer. In 8th grade, he placed 2nd in the 1A-3A Jr High State Touranmanet and 4th at Schoolboy Western Regionals.
Before his freshman year, he moved to Providence, Utah and started wrestling at Mountain Crest High School. He was varsity as a freshman but struggled to maintain his weight at 125. So for the region tournament, he moved up to the 130lb weight class and placed 5th. Unfortunately only four qualified for state at that weight. Not making it to state motivated Cody to work harder. He traveled down to Layton, Clearfield and Draper mutiple days a week to wrestle in different clubs during the off season. He took state in Freestyle and Greco. He attended the Freestyle and Greco National Tournament in Fargo but did not place.
His Sophomore year he placed 3rd in state, only losing 5 times. He again won Freestyle and Greco State and competed regionally and nationally in places like Las Vegas, Denver, Laramie, Virinia, and Fargo, ND. His Junior year he again lost in the state semi finals at State and took 3rd place. Once again, he took state in Freestyle and Greco State and placed 6th at Freestyle Nationals in Fargo.
His senior year, he placed 5th at the Beast of the East in Deleware and finally became a HS State Champions (It took double overtime to do it). After his mission, he decided to wrestle at UVU where he met his wife and got married in 2007. He quit wrestling at UVU his sophomore year and has regreted it ever since. Coaching gives him an outlet to continue working in the sport he loves.
At Westlake, he has been the head coach since 2011. In his five seasons, he has had 16 state placers and one All American. Two have gone on to wrestle in college. As a team, Westlake Wrestling has placed twice in the top 10. In 2013 they placed 6th, and 2016 9th. He loves wrestling and how it prepares his wrestlersfor adulthood. Cody has a wife, Nichole, two girls, Skyler 6 and Londyn 4, and a boy Stryker 1.
